Cosmetic
Dentistry
An attractive smile can make you and the
people around you feel happy and more confident. Cosmetic dentistry
has become very popular in the UK as it is more widely available,
with dentists offering a range of advanced procedures that are
better value than
you may think. 94% of adults notice a smile first so a healthy,
good-looking smile is incredibly important in making that perfect
first impression.
The following questions are those most commonly asked by our patients:
What is cosmetic dentistry?
Cosmetic or aesthetic dentistry is a way of improving your appearance,
much as you would use cosmetic surgery or even a new hairstyle.
There are now a large number of treatments that can safely and
effectively straighten, lighten, reshape and repair your teeth.
These include veneers, white fillings, whitening, orthodontics,
implants, crowns and bridges.
Which treatments should I choose?
All dental treatments are tailored to the individual and your own
personal circumstances, requirements and tastes - you can choose
how much you would like to spend and how much you would like to
change your appearance, from a Hollywood smile
through to a more natural-looking smile. Your dentist will take
time with you to discuss all of the options available and it is
important to note that before any course of cosmetic treatment,
you should have a good standard of dental health.
Why do teeth discolour?
Just as you may have been born with dark hair you may have 'yellowy'
teeth. Your diet will also contribute to staining - coffee, tea,
red wine and smoking will all cause teeth to discolour. Also, previous
dental treatments such as amalgam fillings may create a darker
appearance.
What are the alternatives to amalgam or silver fillings?
White fillings are now a very popular alternative to amalgam fillings.
New dental materials mean it is much easier to find a match for
the shade of a particular tooth and it is difficult to
see that the tooth even has a filling.
What is a dental implant?
Implants replace missing teeth and are a more long-term alternative
to dentures or bridgework. Implants are titanium rods that are
placed into the jawbone, leaving parts sticking out through the
gum, as anchors for fastening dentures or crowns onto.
How can I straighten my crooked teeth?
Teeth can be straightened with orthodontics (braces). This is usually
done during the teenage years, when the teeth are going through
a period of growth. However, more adults are choosing to have
treatment to straighten their teeth. |
